Vijay Rupani is an Indian politician, Member of Legislative Assembly and was selected as the Chief Minister of Gujarat on 7 August 2016. He represents the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was born on August 2, 1956, to Mrs Mayaben Rupani and Mr Ramniklal Rupani in Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon, Myanmar) in a Jain Bania family. He was the youngest son of the couple and has six more siblings. He joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and then in 1971 joined Jan Sangh. He has been linked to the Bharatiya Janta Party since its creation. From 1978 to 1981, he worked as a pracharak of RSS. In 1987, he became the corporator of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) and went on to become the chairman of drainage committee. From 1998 to 1996, he was the chairman of standing committee of RMC. He was re-elected to RMC in 1995. From 1996 to 1997, he served as the Mayor of Rajkot. In 1998, he became the general secretary of BJP's Gujarat unit and served as the chairman of manifesto committee. In 2006, he was appointed as a chairman of Gujarat Tourism. He was a member of Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012. He served as general secretary of BJP's Gujarat unit for four times and chairman of the Gujarat Municipal Finance Board in 2013. He replaced R. C. Faldu on February 19, 2016, to become the state BJP president. He was appointed as the governor of Karnataka in August 2014 when Vajubhai Vala resigned from the post of MLA from Rajkot West.
