Thonakal Gopi aka Thanackal Gopi is an Indian athlete who qualified to represent India at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the marathon event. Born in a tribal family of Kerala on May 24, 1988, his father Kallingal Babu, is a farmer in Sulthan Bathery. He is currently serving in the Indian Army. He joined as a general recruit, starting as a Hawildar at the Army Artillery Center in Hyderabad and completed the 9 months mandatory Army training. He sends all his savings home as he is the only earning member of his family except for a monthly purchase of shoes which are priced at roughly Rs 10,000 per pair to accommodate the number of miles that the athlete runs each month since he does not have any corporate sponsorship and has to purchase his own shoes (as of mid 2016). He and his fellow athletes have to make a huge sacrifice of not meeting their families and staying away from home for 11 out of 12 months of the year in order to compete on the world stage. Higher Secondary School and used to participate in school and college meets where he was spotted by KP Vijayi, physical education teacher who made sure that he did not miss any morning training session.
