She has been elected to Lok Sabha for 8 times. In 2014 she was chosen as the speaker of 16^th Lok Sabha. She is a keen observer and a skilled debater. She has attended various international conferences like 4th World Conference on Women, Beijing (China) September 1995, Sixth Canadian Parliamentary CPA Seminar in Ottawa, Canada from 21 to 27 October 2007, and 58th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Colombo from 7 to 15 September 2012 etc. She defines simplicity and honesty.
