Shilpa Shetty (also known as Shilpa Shetty Kundra after her marriage) is an actress of the Indian Film Industry. She is also a producer, model, entrepreneur and writer. The multi-tasking lady was born on 8th June 1975 in the family of Mr. Surendra Shetty and Mrs. Sunanda Shetty. Her parents are involved in the manufacturing of tamper-proof water caps for the pharmaceutical industry. Shetty did her schooling from St. Anthony Girls’ High School in Chembur, Mumbai and is a graduate of Podar College, Matunga. Shilpa is also a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and was the captain of the volleyball team in school.
Soon after Shilpa completed her secondary education in 1991, she started modelling and appeared in the Limca television commercial. Afterwards, she was seen in various other ad commercials. In 1992, Shetty signed her first film as an actress, the romantic drama-Gaata Rahe Mera Dil. However, the film did not release and thus her first debut was Abbas-Mustan’s Baazigar, inspired by the Hollywood film A Kiss Before Dying. She did a supporting role in the film alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Despite playing just a supporting role, Shilpa’s performance was critically acclaimed and the movie itself was a blockbuster hit. For the same, Shetty received her first nominations at the Filmfare Awards Ceremony.
In the year 1994, Shilpa had a series of new releases including the action drama-Aag, which was her first movie in a leading role. The movie did moderate business at the box-office Shilpa’s performance also received moderate appreciation. Though, her next movie, Mai Khiladi Tu Anari, starring Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Raagheshwari and Shakti Kapoor was super hit and created a huge buzz. Shetty was seen in a double role in the movie and this can be said to be her major break in the industry. Her final release of the year, Aao Pyar Karen opposite Saif Ali Khan did not do really well at the box office.
In the late 1990s, Shetty starred in both Bollywood and Regional films which includes Hathkadi opposite Saif Ali Khan and Govinda, Mr. Romeo alongside Prabhu Deva, Veedevadandi Babu, Auzaar alongside Salman Khan and Sanjay Kapoor and Pardesi Babu. In the early 2000s, Shilpa was seen in roles which bagged her critical applause. The movies were Dhadkan (2000), Rishtey (2002), Garv (2004), Phir Milenge (2004), Dus (2005), Auto Shankar (2005), Life in a...Metro (2007), Apne (2007). Apart from the big screen, Shetty was a member of the judging panel on Sony Entertainment Television dance show, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa alongside Farah Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She featured as a talent judge for the Dance Reality Show, Nach Baliye (Season 5, 6). She was also once featured on Netru, Indru, Naalai, a Mani Ratnam’s stage show. Shetty also won the British reality television series, Celebrity Big Brother 5.
In November 2009, Shilpa married Raj Kundra and have a son whom they named Viaan Raj Kundra. Shilpa and Raj together co-own the Indian Premier League (IPL) Cricket team Rajasthan Royals. Shilpa also co-owns the LOSIS, the Indian chain of spas and salons. Shetty has been also a part of numerous social campaigns against the use of wild animals in circuses and awareness for HIV-AIDS.
In the year 2015, Shilpa launched her first fitness DVD containing Yoga with her black belt in Karate and dance sports expert. She is now directed towards the success of her cookery book Soul Curry.
