Raman Singh is an Indian politician and is the 2nd Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh state who joined the office on 8th December 2008. He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He was born on 15 October 1952 in Kawardha in Chhattisgarh in a Rajput family to Vighnaharan Singh Thakur and Sudha Singh. Raman has been active in politics since 1976-77.
He is a doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine by profession and degree. He is married to Veena Singh and the couple has two children: a son named Abhishek Singh and a daughter named Asmita Singh. Abhishek is a Member of Parliament from Rajnandgaon (Lok Sabha constituency).
Raman became a member of the BJP as a youth member and in 1976-77, became the president of youth wing in Kawardha. In 1990 and 1993, he was elected to Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha from the Rajnandgaon constituency in Chhattisgarh in 1999.
He became the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry from 1999 to 2003. He went on to become the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the new state of Chhattisgarh.
