Jaisha Orchatteri Puthiya Veetil also known as O. P. Jaisha is an Indian track and field athlete. She was born on May 23, 1983, in Kerala. She has been representing India since 2006 when Commonwealth games took place in Melbourne, Australia, 2006. She also represented India in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She is the current national record holder in the marathon and also a former national record holder in the 3000 metres steeplechase. She competes in the 3000 metres event, 3000 metres steeplechase event as well as the 5000 metres event when she started from the 1500 metres event. At the Rio games, she ranked 89thin the women's marathon event by clocking 2:47:19. Her competitors there were Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia, Shalane Flanagan of United States, Rose Chelimo of Bahrain and Jemima Jelagat Sumgong of Kenya. Jaisha was a student of Assumption College, Changanassery. It was her foreign coach Dr Nikolai Snesarev who insisted her move to the longest running category that she shifted her focus to the marathon. In 2005 at the 1st Asian Indoor Games held in Bangkok, she won gold for 1500 metres and 3000 metres and at the 2006 Asian Indoor Championships (held at Pattaya), she won silver in the 1500 metres and a bronze in the 3000 metres. She also bagged a bronze in 5000 metres at the Doha Asiad. In 2008, she took interest in steeplechase when she grabbed the National title at Madurai Inter-State championships. At the 50th National Inter-State Athletics Championships held in Patiala, she broke the Indian national record in 3000 metres steeplechase by clocking 10:03.05 on August 7, 2010, by beating the previous mark set by Sudha Singh on 18 May 2010 in Kochi which clocked 10:09.56.In 2015 at the Mumbai Marathon, she made her marathon debut by grabbing first place in the Indian women's category (eighth overall). Her other achievements include winning bronze in the 1500 metres with a time of 4:13:46 at the 2014 Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea and a gold medal in the 5000m event at the National Games held in February 2016 in Kerala. In August 2015, she also participated at the World Championships in Beijing in the marathon, where she finished 18th thereby improving her time and qualifying for the 2016 Olympics. The JSW Sport is currently supporting her under the Sports Excellence Programme. She has been training in Ooty under the Belarus coach.
