Mariyappan Thangavelu born on 28th July, 1995, in the Periavadagampatti, Salem District, Tamil Nadu, India. He is a Paralympic high jump player. Her parents father divorced her mother Saroja, it was her mother who raised his 4 brothers and 1 sister. Saroja used to do the work of labouring, carrying bricks then started doing the work of a vegetable seller, then she started earning Rs.100 a day. Mariyappan at the age of 5 was diagnosed with permanent disability in his right leg, he got this because of the accident that took place, once a bus driver ran the bus over his leg crushing his knee. After this incident mariyappan didn’t gave up and completed his schooling. He then got a degree in bachelor’s in Business Administration at AVS College of Arts and Science. He desires to complete his degree in MBA from same college. He has 3 siblings, 2 younger brother Kumar and Gopi and 1 elder sister Sudha. Mariyappan was interested in playing volleyball, but his sports instructor motivated him to try High Jumping. In 2013, his coach was Satyanarayana, who trained him for long jump, and was noticed by everyone in Indian National Para-Athletics Championship, after this in 2015 he went to Bengaluru for professional coaching. Mariyappan after clearing the high jump of 1.78m at T-42 event at the IPC Grand Prix in Tunisia, in March 2016 after that he was qualified him for the Rio Paralympics. With a leap of 1.89m, he won the gold medal at the Rio Paralympics in the Men’s High Jump T-42 event. After he got the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, he got the Padma Shri in 2017, from the Government of Tamil Nadu for Rs. 2 crore, from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports he got Rs. 75 Lakhs, from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowernment he got Rs. 30 Lakhs, from Sachin Tendulkar fund he got Rs.15 Lakhs, from Yash Raj Films he got Rs. 10 lakhs, from the Delhi Golf Club he got Rs. 10 lakhs, and from NRI businessman Mukkattu Sebastian he got Rs. 5 Lakhs.
