Lalu Prasad Yadav is an eminent name in Indian politics. He was born on 11 June 1948 to Kundan Rai and Marachhiya Devi. He is a native of Phulwaria, Gopalganj district, Bihar. He was from a poor peasant family. He is a lawyer by profession. He did his bachelor of law and masters in political science from B.N College, Patna. He is an active politician from Bihar constituency saran. From 1990 to 1997, he had been serving as the Chief Minister of Bihar and from 2004 to 2009 as the Railway Minister for UPA government. Currently, he is the president of Rashtriya Janta Dal political party. He entered into politics from his college days and was elected for Lok Sabha membership in 1997. In 1990, he came into power as Chief Minister of Bihar but due to his conviction in fodder scam he had to resign. From 1995 to 2005, he was succeeded by his wife Rabri Devi. He was fined with a sum of 25 Lakhs rupees and sentenced for a five year imprison for his role in fodder scam on October 3, 2013. Yadav was the General Secretary of Patna student union and from there only he started his political career. In 1974, he joined Bihar Movement; it was a student lead movement by Jai Prakash Narayan against rising prices, corruption and other social issues. He was then nominated as Janta Party's candidate in 1977 from Chapra. Lalu at the age of 29 became the youngest member of Indian parliament. When Janta Party came into power in Bihar in 1990, his name was nominated for the Chief Minister Candidate. In 1993, he and his party adopted pro English policy. He wanted English to be a part of school curriculum. On July 5 1997, he formed his own party called” Rashtriya Janta Dal”. In 2004, he became Railway Minister. He introduced mud cups popularly known as “Khullars” in railways and banned plastics mugs. In his leadership and guidance railways made an outstanding profit for four years which was once suffering from heavy losses. But later on, he was alleged of misusing his power. He was charged with several scams and convictions that made his image negative among common man. In 1996, he was accused for fodder scam for which he was fined and imprisoned in 2013. He was also accused for disproportionate assets. Sankarshan Thakur wrote his biography named “Making of Lalu Prasad Yadav, unmaking of Bihar”.
