At the age of 28 years, in 1995 after the death of Kumar's father Aditya Vikram Birla, Kumar Birla took over as the chairman of the group in 1955 and during his work period, the group’s annual turnover has increased from $3.33 billion in 1955 to $41 billion in 2015. As educationist Birla is the chairman of many universities such as IIT Delhi, IIM Ahmedabad. Also, Birla is the chairman of Rhodes India Scholarship Committee for Oxford University. Birla is also an Honorary Fellow of the London Business School. Also, Kumar is the chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science. Kumar Birla has received many awards such as:-
