Challenge Overview

The IEEE SPS Student Design Challenge invites students to create innovative solutions to practical technological challenges, specifically focused on enhancing smartphone audio functionality. This year’s challenge, AV Zoom (Audio Visual Zooming), aims to develop an application for audio zooming, allowing smartphones to focus on specific sounds amidst background noise—an essential feature for environments like public gatherings and transportation hubs.

Key Areas of Focus

• Microphone Array Configuration: Designing the physical microphone setup.
• Algorithm Development: Crafting algorithms to isolate and enhance specific sounds.
• Application Development: Creating an Android/iOS app to implement audio zooming.
• Real-Time Demonstration: Testing the application under real-world conditions.

Phase 1: Proof of Concept (PoC)

• Announcement of Results: December 25, 2024

Phase 2: Video Presentation (VP)

• Mode: Remote
• Deadline: February 1, 2025
• Announcement of Finalists: February 10, 2025

Phase 3: Precursor Lectures & Real-Time Demonstration (RTD)

• Mode: Physical (in-person)
• Date: February 25, 2025 (Forenoon - lectures, Afternoon - RTD and award ceremony)

Awards

• Champion Team: USD 350
• Runner-up: USD 200
• Appreciation Prizes: USD 170 (distributed among selected participants)

• December 15, 2024: Submission deadline for Phase 1.
