Ganapathi Krishnan is an Indian race walker born on June 24, 1989, in Kone Goundanur, a village in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu state. He was selected to represent India at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, in the men's 20 kilometres walk. He still lives in a mud house and could only pursue his dream of participating in Rio Olympics 2016 with the help and support of his father and brother. His father took loans from banks since they did not have enough funds to finance his passion and his brother in Indian Army has not thought twice before supporting him in his pursuit of his dreams. And even after all this, his achievements hardly made much news since racewalking is not that popular. Krishnan studied in Kamaraj Government Higher Secondary School, Mekalachinnampalli, Krishnagiri, where there was no bus facility to school during those days so he used to stay in a hostel which was 9 km from their village. He used to cycle his way home during weekends and collect honey from nearby hills as a habit. His strong physique is the result of all of these routines. His family has always believed that he is a born athlete but he sharpened his skills only after joining the Indian Army. And within the six years of training, he started winning at international levels. His entire family lives on Rs 5000 per month and with no assistance from the government it was hard for him to move on with his dream. In a place where people hardly took racewalking as a sport, Krishnan managed to grab a hold of many medals and championships. He ranked 5th in 2016 National Championships in Race Walking, ranked 5th in 2016 Asian Championships and 22nd in 2016 World Championship. He clocked 1:21:41 hours in the World Championships which was held in Rome in 2016. His timing was not just the best among the Indians there but was good enough to make the cut for Rio. He has never received any financial assistance from the state government, despite winning all this but may he get sponsorship as soon as possible to assist his dreams.
