Dibakar Banerjee is a Film Director, Screenwriter, Advertisement filmmaker was born in New Delhi, India on 21st June 1969. He completed his education at Bal Bharti Public School, Delhi and went to National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad to study visual communications and graphic designing but left it midway and came back to Delhi. He worked with filmmaker Sam Mathews in New Delhi. Dibakar is married to Richa Puranesh and the couple has one daughter. In his starting of career, he worked advertising as a copywriter with Shems Combit, TBWA Anthem and later worked in Delhi. Banerjee worked for with Pradeep Sarkar and Jaideep Sahni, who penned story, screenplay, dialogues and lyrics of the movie Khosla Ka Ghosla, later he left the agency and started his own company named Watermark, where he used to produce promos for Channel V and MTV and many Ad films as well. He made his big directorial debut with movie Khosla Ka Ghosla in 2006 and was well appreciated by audiences and critics. After this, he wrote and directed Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! In 2008, starring Abhay Deol, Neetu Chandra and Paresh Rawal, it was a hit at box office. In 2010 Banerjee experimented and directed India’s first film Love Sex Aur Dhokha which was entirely on Digital Camera and was presented in the form of found videos. in 2012 he came up with his political drama movie Shanghai in 2012, starring Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Emraan Hashmi, the film got a good response. He worked with ace filmmakers like Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap and directed one story of the movie featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui which was the short story, Patol Babu. The movie was not accepted by the audiences but critics praised his directing skills. Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Banerjee made a film based on Detective Byomkesh Bakshy in 2015, the movie gained mixed review. Dibakar was not able to execute the movies in an impactful manner, with every movie his fans were disappointed by him. He was not able to reach the success and gain recognition like every director dreams of. He produced a short film named Titli in 2015 which was selected in the UN Certain Regard section of 2014 Cannes Film Festival. In October 2015 with other 12 filmmakers, he returned his National Award for Khosla Ka Ghosla in order to protest against the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in order to roll bock FTII’s appointment of Gajendra Chauhan. After 3 years Dibakar is making his come back with movie Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar starring Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor, his fans are eagerly waiting for the movie in 2018 to see him as a more creative person.
