The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is the chief executive of the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The tenure of the Chief Minister extends as long as he or she enjoys the confidence of the assembly. The chief minister has to leave the office in case a motion of no confidence is passed. If the case of death, demit or dismissal of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the vacant office is held by another person who is invited by the Governor of the state to form the government. He suggests the new representative move a confidence-seeking motion in the Legislative Assembly. M. G. Ramachandran held the office for the longest tenure which was 10 years, 5 months and 25 days from June 30, 1977, until his death on December 24, 1987. P. S. Kumaraswamy Raja who belonged to the Indian National congress became the first chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
