The Chief Minister of Punjab is the most powerful person in the state. He is the head of the council of ministers and the government of Punjab. He is appointed by the governor of the state. Total 15 chief ministers have ruled over Punjab since 1947. He can be removed when a vote of no-confidence is cast against him/her by the Punjab Legislative Assembly. In such a case, a vote of no-confidence is also cast against the entire Council of Ministers and it has to resign along with the chief minister for whom it was working. Prakash Singh Badal who belongs to the Shiromani Akali Dal is the current chief minister of Punjab. He took his oath on March 1, 2007.
