In 2009, the Government of India under the Central Universities Act (Section 25 of 2009) via an Act of Parliament established the Central University of Himachal Pradesh. The University was established on 20th March 2009. The Central University of Himachal Pradesh is wholly funded by the University Grant Commission (UGC). Due to pending work in the development of permanent campus, currently the University is operating from its temporary academic block which is established at Shahpur, Himachal Pradesh. The Central University of Himachal Pradesh wants to bestow excellence in higher education. The University wants to educate and train manpower for the development of the country. The University will have two permanent campuses namely, Beas Campus at Dehra and Dhauladher Campus at Dharamshala. The Camp Offices, which presently serves as the Headquarter of the University is located in the Sanskriti Sadan (Writers' Home), at Dharamshala (Near International Cricket Stadium), District Kangra. The Offices of the Vice Chancellor, Registrar and Finance Officer are located in the Camp Office.
The University Campus is in urban area. The Chancellor of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh is Shri Arun Maira who is also the member of the Planning Commission, Govt. of India. The Vice-Chancellor of the University is Prof. Furgan Qamar. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University is Prof. Yoginder S. Verma. Central University of Himachal Pradesh offers postgraduates and research degree programmes to the students. Some of the courses offered by the university are MBA, M.Phil, PhD, M.Sc (in Physics, Mathematics, Bio Informatics, Information Technology Environmental Science and Computational Biology), MSW, MA (in Economics, Education, Hindi, etc.), M.LIB, and many more. The facilities which are being provided by the university to the students are Library, Sports Facility, Limited Transport Facility, Video Conferencing Facility, Cafeteria, Hostel Facility and many more.
