Dr. A K Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), delivered a powerful speech on Founder’s Day, commemorating the 115th birth anniversary of Dr. Homi J. Bhabha, the visionary behind India’s nuclear program. Celebrated annually at BARC, Founder’s Day serves as a reflection on Dr. Bhabha’s enduring legacy and his unparalleled contributions to modern India’s scientific and technological landscape.

In his address, Dr. Mohanty urged DAE members to embrace Dr. Bhabha’s Karmayogi spirit and continue working towards India’s self-reliance in nuclear technology. He lauded several significant achievements over the past year across DAE’s key initiatives, underscoring the nation’s progress in nuclear energy, healthcare, scientific research, and advanced technology.

Highlights from the Nuclear Power Program

Dr. Mohanty highlighted the ongoing efforts toward self-sufficiency in nuclear energy, citing 15,598 tonnes of uranium oxide resource augmentation across several states. He mentioned the milestone of commercial operations for Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) units 3 and 4, and the historic achievements at India’s Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR). These advancements signify India’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and emphasize its progress in nuclear technology.

Healthcare and Radiopharmaceutical Advancements

In the healthcare sector, the National Cancer Grid, led by Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), has continued to expand its reach, now comprising 362 members nationwide. Dr. Mohanty celebrated BARC’s breakthrough in the NOx releasing wound dressing for diabetic foot ulcers, which recently received regulatory approval in India. This achievement, along with BRIT’s development of high-purity Lutetium-177 for cancer treatment, reinforces DAE’s role in providing affordable, accessible healthcare solutions.

Scientific Research and Technoloxagical Innovations

Dr. Mohanty spoke on DAE’s groundbreaking research initiatives, from terahertz microscopy at TIFR to the MACE Observatory in Ladakh, the largest Cherenkov telescope in Asia. He underscored the discovery of cosmic ray spectrum details by GRAPES-3 in Ooty and TIFR’s successful testing of a 6-qubit quantum processor, representing India’s strides in quantum computing.

DAE’s innovative Magnetite Recovery Plant and plasma-based pyrolysis technology for biomedical waste disposal further highlight the department’s commitment to advanced materials, sustainability, and environmental solutions.

Dr. Mohanty concluded by commending the dedication of DAE staff, healthcare workers, and scientists, emphasizing the need for continued contributions to fulfill DAE’s vision for Atoms in Service of the Nation.
