Three Types of Training under PMKVY 4.0

The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 4.0 is a significant step towards empowering India’s youth by providing them with the skills needed for better employment opportunities. PMKVY 4.0 offers three distinct types of training programs, each tailored to meet the diverse needs of different groups in society. These programs are designed to equip individuals with industry-relevant skills, recognize their existing skills, and provide specialized training for marginalized communities.

1. Short-Term Training (STT)

Objective: To provide fresh skill training aligned with industry demands.

Short-Term Training (STT) is the cornerstone of PMKVY 4.0, offering courses aligned with the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF). These courses typically range between 300 to 600 hours, but can be extended based on the specific needs of industries or sectors. The STT program is delivered through accredited and affiliated training centers across the country, ensuring a standard of quality and consistency.

Key Features:

  • Industry-Relevant Courses: Courses are designed to meet current industry demands, ensuring that participants gain skills that are in high demand.
  • On-the-Job Training (OJT): An essential component of STT, OJT provides hands-on experience in a real work environment. The duration of OJT varies depending on the job role and is mandated by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET).
  • Flexible Duration: While the standard duration is between 300-600 hours, longer courses may be offered depending on sectoral needs.

2. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Objective: To certify individuals with existing skills and provide them with industry-recognized credentials.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is designed for individuals who already possess certain skills and experience but lack formal certification. RPL assesses these skills and provides certification, which can enhance the individual’s employability and career prospects. This program is especially beneficial for workers in the informal sector who may have gained skills on the job but need formal recognition to advance their careers.

Key Features:

  • Skill Assessment: Candidates are assessed based on their existing knowledge and skills, with a focus on ensuring they meet industry standards.
  • Upskilling Opportunities: RPL also emphasizes upskilling, allowing individuals to improve their skill levels and achieve higher certification based on their assessments.
  • Industry Certification: Upon successful assessment, candidates receive industry-recognized certification, improving their job prospects and potential for higher earnings.

3. Special Projects

Objective: To address the unique training needs of marginalized groups and provide specialized skills in emerging job roles.

Special Projects under PMKVY 4.0 are designed to cater to the specific needs of marginalized and vulnerable groups, as well as regions that are geographically difficult to reach. These projects also focus on new-age job roles requiring future skills, which may not be covered under standard short-term training programs. Special Projects can be residential or non-residential and may include certain exemptions approved by the Executive Committee.
