National Mission for Empowerment of Women: State-Wise Implementation and Future Plans

The Government of India has made significant strides in promoting the empowerment of women through the National Mission for Empowerment of Women. This mission aims to bring various women-centric programs under a single umbrella to ensure coordinated efforts and greater impact. In this article, we will focus on the details of where this mission has been set up state-wise and the government's plans for launching more schemes in the future.

State-Wise Implementation of the Mission

The National Mission for Empowerment of Women has been implemented at multiple levels to ensure comprehensive coverage and effective execution.

Mission Directorate and National Resource Centre for Women (NRCW):

  • At the central level, the Mission Directorate and NRCW have been established to provide technical support to the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), other line ministries, and states.

State Mission Authorities (SMA):

  • In the states, State Mission Authorities (SMA) have been constituted to serve as the apex body for policy guidance and oversight. These bodies are headed by the respective Chief Ministers/Administrators and include various line departments as members, with the Minister of Women and Child Development as the convener.
  • As of now, SMAs have been notified in 32 States/Union Territories. This ensures a wide-reaching impact across the country.

State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW):

  • SRCWs have been set up in 31 States/Union Territories. These centers consist of gender experts who provide secretarial and technical support to the Department of Women and Child Development at the state level. They act as the implementing arm of the mission under the Secretary of Social Welfare and Ministry of Women and Child Development.

District-Level Convergence Centers:

  • At the district level, convergence cum facilitation centers for women, known as Poorna Shakti Kendras, have been set up in select districts. These centers aim to improve access to government schemes and programs, raise awareness on social issues such as violence against women, child sex ratio, child marriage, and sanitation.
  • Currently, Poorna Shakti Kendras are operational in 33 districts across various states.
