Monthly Welding Personnel Report: Qualification and Certification Details

Welding personnel are the backbone of many industries, from construction to manufacturing, where precision and safety are paramount. In accordance with the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) standards, companies are required to submit monthly reports detailing the qualifications of welders, operators, and robotic welding programmers. This report helps ensure that welding practices meet industry standards and that personnel are up-to-date with their qualifications. Below, we provide insights into what a welding personnel report typically includes, with data sourced from a Sample Report of Welding Personnel by the CWB Group (December 2023).

The Structure of the Welding Personnel Report:

A welding personnel report is divided into several key sections to provide detailed information about the employees’ qualifications, welding processes, and the status of their certifications. Let’s take a look at how the report is structured:

Key Fields in the Welding Personnel Report:

Company Information:

  • Company Name: This field contains the name of the company submitting the report.
  • Address: The physical address of the company for record purposes.

Personnel Categories: The report categorizes employees based on their roles:

  • Welders (W)
  • Tack Welders (T)
  • Operators (O)
  • Robotic Welding Programmers (RP)
  • Robotic Welding Operators (RO)

Qualification Details: Each welding personnel's qualification is recorded based on several criteria:

  • First and Last Name: Full name of the employee.
  • CWB ID: The unique identifier assigned by the Canadian Welding Bureau.
  • Type: This indicates the specific qualification type, such as Welder, Operator, or Robotic Programmer.
  • Process: The welding process used by the employee.
  • Class: This indicates the welding position, such as Flat (F), Horizontal (H), Vertical (V), and Overhead (O).
  • Classification: Additional certifications as per CSA standards.
  • Expiry Date: The date by which the qualification must be renewed.
  • Qualifying Authority: The organization that provided the qualification (e.g., CWB or ASME).
  • Work Location: Whether the employee works in the shop (S) or field (F).

Welding Classifications: Employees are further classified based on welding types as per CSA standards:

  • T, S, FW, WT
  • Annex J and Annex M classifications: AP-G, AS-G1, FW-M, WT-M, etc.

Importance of Monthly Reporting:

The monthly report of welding personnel is a crucial document for maintaining compliance with welding standards. Regular reporting helps in:

  • Ensuring all employees maintain up-to-date qualifications.
  • Minimizing errors and safety hazards in welding tasks.
  • Helping companies keep a check on welding personnel's certifications, thereby reducing the risk of costly errors.

The report also serves as an audit tool for the CWB Group during periodic inspections.

Qualification Expiry and Check Testing:

To reduce costs, check testing can be performed up to 90 days before the expiry date of a qualification. This ensures the continuity of work without certification lapses. However, if testing is done more than 90 days prior to expiry, the cycle of the qualification's expiry date will remain unaffected.
