Aizawl, August 8, 2024: Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati convened a review meeting with the Fisheries Department and key banking institutions at Raj Bhavan to discuss the enhancement of fish farming activities in Mizoram. The meeting aimed to strengthen bank linkage with fish farmers and boost self-sufficiency in the state's fish production.
In his opening remarks, Governor Dr. Kambhampati emphasized the potential of fishery activities as a vital area for Mizoram to achieve self-sufficiency. He acknowledged the limited budget allocation for the Fisheries Department for the current fiscal year but encouraged the department to maximize the use of resources available through Centrally sponsored schemes.
Pu H. Lalengmawia, Commissioner & Secretary of the Fisheries Department, provided an update on the department's recent activities, achievements, and future initiatives. The department is currently exploring over 4,000 hectares of the 24,000 hectares of potential fish farming areas in the state. Despite the national average fish consumption being 11-13 kg per capita, Mizoram's current production is only 6.4 kg per capita.
Representatives from Mizoram Rural Bank, State Bank of India, and Mizoram Cooperative Apex Bank shared their experiences with bank linkages to fish farmers. They provided feedback on the effectiveness of loan returns and discussed ways to improve financial assistance to the farmers.
