Aizawl, August 8, 2024: Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati convened a review meeting with the Fisheries Department and key banking institutions at Raj Bhavan to discuss the enhancement of fish farming activities in Mizoram. The meeting aimed to strengthen bank linkage with fish farmers and boost self-sufficiency in the state's fish production.

Key Discussion Points

Importance of Fishery Development

In his opening remarks, Governor Dr. Kambhampati emphasized the potential of fishery activities as a vital area for Mizoram to achieve self-sufficiency. He acknowledged the limited budget allocation for the Fisheries Department for the current fiscal year but encouraged the department to maximize the use of resources available through Centrally sponsored schemes.

  • Governor's Key Suggestions:
    • Propose more projects to the Ministry of Fisheries.
    • Strengthen coordination with banking institutions.
    • Increase awareness campaigns about available schemes and financial assistance through bank loans.

Fisheries Department Updates

Pu H. Lalengmawia, Commissioner & Secretary of the Fisheries Department, provided an update on the department's recent activities, achievements, and future initiatives. The department is currently exploring over 4,000 hectares of the 24,000 hectares of potential fish farming areas in the state. Despite the national average fish consumption being 11-13 kg per capita, Mizoram's current production is only 6.4 kg per capita.

  • Current Challenges:
    • Limited exploration of potential fish farming areas.
    • Low per capita fish production compared to the national average.
