Government’s Proposal on Modifying Ward Eligibility for Pre-7th CPC Pensioners under CGHS

The Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) is a pivotal healthcare facility for central government employees, pensioners, and their dependents. With the implementation of the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC), significant modifications have been introduced in the ward eligibility criteria. • General Ward: Up to Rs. 47,600 (previously up to Rs. 36,500)
• Semi-private Ward: Rs. 47,601 to Rs. 63,100 (previously Rs. 36,501 to Rs. 50,500)
• Private Ward: Above Rs. 63,101 (previously above Rs. 50,500)

These changes were made to align with the new pay structure recommended by the 7th CPC.

2. Issue for Pre-7th CPC Pensioners: Despite these revisions, pensioners and family pensioners who retired before the implementation of the 7th CPC continue to face challenges. Their ward entitlement has not been updated, leading to disparities in the healthcare benefits they receive under CGHS.

3. Government’s Proposal: There have been queries raised in the Lok Sabha regarding whether the government plans to issue a separate order to address this disparity. Specifically, the question is whether the government proposes to modify the ward eligibility criteria under CGHS for all pensioners, including family pensioners, who retired before the 7th CPC came into effect.

4. Details and Implementation: If the government decides to issue a new order, it will provide much-needed relief to many pensioners. The modification would ensure that these pensioners receive healthcare benefits at par with those who retired post-7th CPC. The order would detail:
