Ensuring Efficient Testing of Hallmarked Jewellery Samples: Guidelines for BIS Test Requests and Sample Handling
Sample testing is a crucial part of the hallmarking process, ensuring that jewellery meets the required standards of purity and authenticity. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has established detailed guidelines for preparing test requests and handling samples, ensuring efficiency and accuracy in the testing process.
Preparing the Test Request
The process begins with the dealing officer in the Branch Office (BO), who is responsible for preparing the test request. This request must include:
- Detailed Information: Information about the sample, including type, weight, and hallmark details.
- Proper Documentation: All necessary documentation supporting the test request.
The test request ensures that the sample is ready for dispatch and subsequent testing.
Dispatching Samples to BIS Referral Laboratories
Once the test request is prepared, the samples must be sent to BIS referral laboratories. Key guidelines include:
- Insured Parcel: Samples should be dispatched by insured parcel to protect against loss or damage during transit.
- Timely Dispatch: Samples must be sent within 2 working days of receipt in the BO to ensure prompt testing.
Handling Non-Acceptance by BIS Labs
In some cases, BIS labs may not accept a sample. When this occurs:
- Alternative Labs: Samples can be sent to any other BIS approved referral lab for testing.
- Maintaining Standards: These labs adhere to the same high standards, ensuring reliable testing results.
Steps for Jewellers to Ensure Compliance
Jewellers must work closely with BOs to ensure compliance with BIS guidelines:
