Enhancing Collaboration: The Role of OCC Meetings in the Power Sector

Shri A.K.V. Bhaskar, Chairperson of TCC & Director (Grid Transmission and Management) APTRANSCO, emphasized the importance of OCC (Operating Coordination Committee) meetings as a crucial platform for entities to gain insights into day-to-day events in the power sector. Despite his extensive experience in SLDC (State Load Dispatch Center), he expressed regret for not being able to attend OCC meetings earlier at EE (Executive Engineer) or SE (Superintending Engineer) levels.

Bhaskar highlighted the OCC forum as instrumental in enhancing knowledge sharing, raising awareness about new regulations and advisories from higher bodies such as MoP (Ministry of Power), MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy), and CEA (Central Electricity Authority). He commended the constructive discussions held in OCC meetings, which have contributed to the development of the existing transmission system in the Southern Region (SR). Bhaskar lauded the exemplary performance of SRPC (Southern Regional Power Committee) and SRLDC (Southern Regional Load Dispatch Centre), presenting them as role models for effective issue resolution, future planning, and real-time grid management.

Furthermore, Bhaskar emphasized the crucial role of GENCOs (Generation Companies) in meeting state demand, particularly during high-demand periods. He noted challenges faced in meeting demand due to less generation during the COVID-19 impacted year of 2021, leading to a surge in power prices in the market. He projected a maximum consumption of around 270 MU and an average consumption of around 255 MU during April and May 2024 in the AP system. Bhaskar urged GENCOs to ensure maximum generation capacity and complete all outages before January 31, 2024, to meet peak demand effectively.
