Document Attestation for Indian Market Entry: A Guide for German Exporters and Entrepreneurs

Demystifying Document Attestation for India: A Guide for German Exports

Navigating the process of getting your commercial documents certified for use in India can be confusing, especially when exporting from Germany. This guide outlines the steps and requirements involved in obtaining attestation from the Embassy of India in Berlin.

What documents need attestation?

Any commercial document required for business or legal purposes in India likely needs attestation. This includes certificates, contracts, invoices, and various legal documents.

Getting your documents attested:

Initial Attestation: First, take your documents to the relevant German District Court (Landgericht) in your area. They will verify and attest the documents.

Submission to Embassy: Submit the attested copies along with photocopies of your passport/ID in duplicate (original and photocopy) to the Indian Embassy in Berlin.

Document Delivery: Send your documents and payment only by post to the address provided by the Embassy.

Payment: Pay the attestation fee of €44.00 via bank transfer using the specified details.

Return Postage: Include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage (€4.25, subject to change) for the Embassy to return your documents.

Processing Time:

Allow 3-5 working days after the Embassy receives your documents and payment for processing.

Important Notes:

  • The Embassy only attests the seal and signature of the German District Court, not the document's content.
  • They only attest documents issued by District Courts within their jurisdiction (Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).

Additional Tips:

  • Contact the Embassy beforehand to confirm any updates or specific requirements for your document type.
  • Ensure your documents are complete, accurate, and well-organized for a smoother process.
  • Consider seeking professional assistance from a legal or documentation service provider if needed.

Remember: This guide provides general information, and specific procedures may vary based on your situation and document type. Consulting with legal professionals or the Embassy itself is always recommended for tailored advice and successful document attestation for your specific needs.
