‘Advocacy is not a craft but a calling; a profession in which devotion to duty is the hallmark.’1 Advocacy involves influencing decisions made by political, economic, and social institutions, aimed at creating a fair and just society through public policy, legislation, and budget advocacy.

THE LAMPS OF ADVOCACY

HONESTY

The first and most crucial lamp of advocacy is Honesty. It signifies the ethical foundation of the profession, requiring advocates to be trustworthy, truthful, and transparent in their dealings with clients, opponents, and the court.

COURAGE

Courage is the second lamp, essential for advocates to fearlessly combat social injustices and uphold the principles of justice in civil and criminal litigation.

INDUSTRY

Industry denotes the diligent work ethic required of advocates, necessitating continuous legal education and adaptation to evolving laws.

WIT

Wit is the fourth lamp, enhancing an advocate's ability to articulate complex ideas effectively and respond adeptly in legal proceedings.

ELOQUENCE

Eloquence, the fifth lamp, emphasizes persuasive oral communication skills crucial for effective advocacy in court.

JUDGEMENT

Judgement, the sixth lamp, highlights the importance of critical thinking and informed decision-making in legal practice.

FELLOWSHIP

Fellowship, the seventh lamp, underscores the need for mutual respect and collegiality among advocates, even in adversarial contexts.
