Vikas Mahatme is a famous Indian politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Medical Practitioner, Teacher, Educationist, Sheep Rearing, Social Worker, and Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), the upper house of the Indian Parliament from the state of Maharashtra. He was born on 11 December 1957 (age 64 years according to 2021) in Wathoda-Shukleshwar, Distt. Amravati (Maharashtra), India. His father’s name is Late Shri Haribhau Mahatme and his mother’s name is Late Shrimati Kamal Mahatme. His educational qualification is M.B.B.S., M.S. (Ophthalmology) from Government Medical College, Nagpur (Maharashtra). His religion belongs to Hinduism and Nationality, Indian. He is married to Dr. Sunita Mahatme on 2 November 1992 and has one son.
Dr. Vikas Mahatme is first a successful eye surgeon of international repute. He was the first to start an eye bank in Vidarbha, Maharashtra, and establish the eye donation movement there. He is the founder and Medical Director of Mahatme Eye Bank & Eye Hospital. He has performed over one lakh eye surgeries. He has been awarded the Col. Rangachari Award by the All India Ophthalmological Society for the best paper read at the special plenary session of the annual conference in 1996 and Padmashri Awarded Indian ophthalmologist. He has also been worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College, Nagpur.
In 2016, he joined politics and was first elected to the member of Rajya Sabha from the state of Maharashtra. Currently, he is serving as a member of the Central Coordination Committee since 2016, Member of the Indian Nursing Council since 2017, member of Committee on Subordinate Legislation since 2018, member of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur, and member of Committee on Coal, Mines, and Steel since 2019.
