Vijay Kumar is a famous Indian 25 meter rapid fire & 10-meter air pistol shooter. He was born on 19 August 1985 (age 36 according to 2021) in Harsour, Hamirpur Himachal Pradesh, India. His father’s name is Banku Ram Sharma (a retired Indian Army subedar) and his mother’s name is Roshni Devi (a homemaker). Abhishek holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Manav Rachna University in Faridabad. His religion belongs to Hinduism and nationality, Indian. Vijay Kumar belongs to an army family as a kid who was always fascinated by his father’s guns. In 2001, he enrolled in the Indian Army as a sepoy. Due to which he developed an interest in shooting. He was also admitted to the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) in 2003 at Mhow. In 2006, his talents secured him a direct promotion from sepoy to havildar (sergeant). Later in 2006, he was promoted to Naib Subedar. Being in Army, Vijay for the first time participated in the 2006 Commonwealth Games where he won 2 gold medals one individually in a 25-meter rapid fire pistol and the other in a pair, and was part of the Asian Games and won bronze. In the same year, he received the Arjuna Award for his dynamic performance in pistol shooting. In 2007, he played at the Asian Championship in the 25 m center fire pistol event and finished with the second position. The shooter also earned a silver medal at the World Cup Beijing in 2009 in the rapid-fire pistol event. Due to his seniority from July 2008, he got promoted to Subedar.
In the period of 2010 to 2014 he has been part of Commonwealth and Olympic Games in which he played at the 25-meter rapid fire pistol pairs, 25-meter center fire pistol singles events, has made his country proud by achieving 5 gold and 4 silver medals also scored 1162 points and set a new Commonwealth Games record. In 2012, he received the highest sporting honor of India "Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award”, in 2013 the government of India honored Vijay with Padma Shri Award and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal. After 15 years of service, Vijay retired from the army in the year, 2017. He also has been offered a direct-entry position as deputy superintendent of police (DSP) by the Himachal Pradesh state government.
