He acquired his Bachelor's degree in filming and did a course in Media, Entertainment and Film Technology from ITFT Chandigarh. Chandigarh. He made his debut in Farhan Akhtar's 2013 film production Fukrey which made him an overnight star.
His passion for acting started at school. When he was a kid, Sanjay Dutt came as the Chief Guest in his school on the Founder's Day. A play took place in on the Founder's Day in which he was an extra standing on stage and though he didn't get to meet Sanjay Dutt but from the moment he knew what he wanted to do in his life- acting. He started doing theatre and performed plays at the state and national level. After post-graduation, he shifted to Mumbai to work with casting director Nandini Shrikent and assisted her in movies like Talaash, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and many others. The first film office he visited in Mumbai, was of Excel Entertainment with Nandini, who was casting for Talaash. He assisted Nandini for over a year- and-a-half. She was the one who knew that he was interested in acting rather than assisting and wherever possible, she would take his auditions for a role. She supported his dreams and motivated him to audition for Fukrey and to his surprise he was selected to play the role of Choocha in the film.
Fukrey was a surprise Bollywood hit as it didn’t have big stars. He was seen in ad commercials like Virgin Mobile, eBay, Nissan Micra, Airtel, etc. before doing the film.He won 2013 Star Guild Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role for Fukrey and 2013 Zee Cine Award for Best Actor in a Comic Role for his performance. He appeared next in Rabba Main Kya Karoon released in 2013. The same year his movie Warning was released. He later starred in 2014 Yaaran Da Katchup which was a Punjabi film, Angrej in 2015 in which he did a cameo and Dolly Ki Doli, KisKiskoPyaarKaroon and Dilwale in 2015. He will next appear in Raabta, a romantic flick. Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor, and Vir Das are his rivals.
