He was born to Sanjay Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi and is the grandson of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, and the great-grandson of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Progeny of political stalwarts, his induction into politics was an inevitable fare. He got his first taste in political affairs during his mother's campaign in Philbit constituency in 1999. Previously part of NDA, Maneka Gandhi officially joined BJP along with his son in 2004. Varun Gandhi campaigned for the party in the 2004 elections, covering over 40 constituencies. In the 2009 general election, the BJP decided to field Varun Gandhi as its candidate from the Pilibhit constituency instead of his mother Maneka Gandhi where she had won five consecutive elections. He won the seat by defeating V.M. Singh. He went on to become the youngest ever general secretary of the party in 2013. In 2014, Gandhi began his campaign for the 2014 elections in Sultanpur which he won by defeating Pawan Pandey of BSP.
He helped run Maneka Gandhi's campaign from Philbit constituency in 1994. Varun Gandhi campaigned for the BJP in the 2004 elections, covering over 40 constituencies. He won the 15th Lok Sabha elections from the Philbit constituency previously occupied by his mother. He defeated V.M Singh by a margin of 281501 votes in 2009. He was appointed the youngest General Secretary of BJP in 2013. He decided to run from Sultanpur constituency and won the elections by defeating BSP's Pawan Pander by a margin of 178894 votes in 2014. He will be contesting from the Philbit constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
