Vaiyapuri Gopalsamy, better known as Vaiko, is an Indian politician. He was born on May 22, 1944 (age 77 years), in Kalingappatti, India. He is a Member of the Rajya Sabha since 2019. He did his study at Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College (1969), Presidency College(autonomous), St. Xavier's College (1964). His father’s name is Shri Vaiyapuri. He married Renuka Devi.
Vaiko started the Marumalarchi Blood Donors' Club. Vaiko has undergone a month-long padayatra in Tamil Nadu demanding the interlinking of inter-state rivers in India in 2005. Tamil Nadu CID police arrested him on charges of sedition. The charges stemmed from speeches Vaiko made at a party meeting. He gave remarks on the Sri Lankan issue and the government's raids into LTTE-held areas. After 14 days in judicial custody, he was released in 2008. He contested Loksabha's Election from Virudhunagar. He was defeated by Manicka Tagore of INC in 2009. Again he contested from Virudhnagar Loksabha constituency and lost. He was defeated by Radhakrishnan T of AIADMK in 2014. In the 2016 Tamil Nadu state assembly elections, Vaiko contested from Kovilpatti seat. He fielded 29 MDMK candidates. None of them won.
