He is an Ethiopian public health researcher and official who have served as Director-General of The World Health Organization (WHO) since 2017. Tedros is the first African and first non-physician, who has been endorsed by the African Union. He has held two high-level positions, first as Minister of Health from 2005 to 2012 and second as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2016 in the Government of Ethiopia.
