Thalikkottai Rajuthevar Baalu is a famous Indian politician of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Social Worker, Engineer, Industrialist, and the Member of the Parliament of India. He is better known as T. R. Baalu. He was born on 15 June 1941 (age 80 years according to 2021) in Thalikottai, Tanjore district Madras Presidency, British Raj Tamil Nadu, India. His father’s name is Shri Rajuthevar. His educational qualification is B.Sc. from New College, Chennai in Madras University, and a diploma in drafting engineering drawings from Central polytechnic Chennai. His religion belongs to Hinduism and nationality, Indian. He married T.R.B. Porkodi B. Renukadevi on 19 Oct 1970 and was blessed with 3 sons and 2 daughters. He has been widely traveled to many countries.
T. R. Baalu started his political career at an early age as he joined DMK at the age of 16 in 1957. He came into the limelight when he became secretary of D.M.K., Madras District Unit for 11 years (1982-93). In 1986 he was elected to Rajya Sabha for the first time and became a Member of the Public Accounts Committee, Member of Committee on Rules (Rajya Sabha) in the same year. After that, he was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996 and maintained his position in Lok Sabha continuously for 5 terms from 1996 to 2009. In 1996 he became Minister of State in the Ministry Petroleum and Natural Gas, Member of Parliamentary Committee on Railways in 1998, and Member of Parliamentary Consultative Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs in 1998. Baalu served as Cabinet Minister of Environment and Forests from 1999 to December 2003 and as Minister of Shipping and Road Transport and Highways from 2004 to 2009. In May 2009, he was announced to be the leader of the DMK party in Parliament. He has also been Chairman of the Department Related Standing Committee of Parliament of the Ministry of Railways. In May 2019 he was re-elected to 17th Lok Sabha (6th term) from the Sriperumbudur constituency. He is also a member of the Committee on Public Accounts, a Member of the Standing Committee on Railways, a member of the committee on Privileges, a member of the General Purposes Committee, Lok Sabha, and a member of the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs since 2019.
