Swaraj Abhiyan is a political movement which was initiated by Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav. Both were members of the famous Aam Aadmi Party. In 2014, Prashant Bhushan showed discontentment with the selection procedure of Aam Aadmi Party candidates in Delhi Legislative Assembly election which was held in 2015.
This led to a series of allegations and counter-allegations. Due to this conflict of ideology, he along with Yogendra Yadav was expelled from the party and it ultimately led to the formation of Swaraj India Party.
The main aim of the Abhiyan is to attain swaraj which literally means self-governance in political, cultural, economical and social aspects of life. Swaraj Abhiyan tackled several social issues like the closure of illegal liquor vends in the residential areas, garbage disposal problem of Delhi etc. before forming a political outfit.
Another movement initiated by Swaraj Abhiyan is Jai Kisan Andolan. It was also initiated to fight for the rights of farmers in India. Its main objective was to draw attention to the unfavourable conditions of the farmers which were a result of lack of stability in public policies relating to agriculture. Yogendra Yadav was the convenor of the Andolan. It started a march (Jai Kisan March) on 1st August 2015 from Thikriwalain Punjab.
Swaraj India has given tickets to various people who were involved in the Janlokpal movement. Out of its 25 candidates,16 were closely associated with India Against Corruption movement. 7 of the members are below the age of 35, as the motto of the party is to increase active participation of the youth. The youngest member of the party is Sundar Bhati from Aya Nagar who was previously an active member in the India against Corruption Movement. Special emphasis is given to encourage the participation of women in the party.
