Just after Manika Batra became the first Indian woman to win a table tennis singles match at the Olympics in 29 years, West Bengal’s Sutirtha Mukherjee also joined the club, winning after a dominating performance. With coach Soumyadeep Roy on the sidelines, Sutirtha found inspiration and gave a steady competition to Bergström, especially from the second game, after which there was no stopping the Bengal girl.
Sutirtha Mukherjee made her international debut in Slovakia at the 2013 Junior ITTF Open, winning three titles in the Girls’ Singles, Doubles, and Team competitions. She made her senior-level debut at the Asian Table Tennis Championships that year, then went on to compete in the Australian Open and the Korean Open. She competed at the World Junior Table Tennis Championships in December but lost in the first round of both the singles and doubles tournaments. Sutirtha Mukherjee competed in the World Table Tennis Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany, in 2017, however she was eliminated in the first round.
