Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa is a famous Indian politician of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Agriculturist, Social Worker and Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), the upper house of the Indian Parliament from the state of Punjab. He was born on 9 April 1936 (age 85 years according to 2021) in Ubhawal, Distt. Sangrur, Punjab, India. His father’s name is Late Sardar Rattan Singh and his mother’s name is Late Shrimati Labh Kaur. His educational qualification is Bachelor of Arts from Government Ranbir College, Sangrur, Punjab. His religion belongs to Sikhism and Nationality, Indian. He is married to Shrimati Harjit Kaur on 1 May 1962 and has three children one son and two daughters.
Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa entered politics in his graduation years as he was an active student leader. After that, he was elected as the Sarpanch of his native village Ubhawal in the Sangrur district. Dhindsa won the Dhanaula Assembly Constituency seat as an independent candidate in 1972 and later joined Shiromani Akali Dal. He has been a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly for four terms (1972, 1977, 1980, and 1985). In between, he was appointed to the Minister of State (Independent Charge) holding the portfolios of Transport, Sports, Tourism, Cultural Affairs, and Civil Aviation, Government of Punjab for 1977 – 80 and Chairman (Cabinet Minister rank), Punjab State, Electricity Board, Patiala for 1997-98. In 1998, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from the state of Punjab and Re-elected to Rajya Sabha (second term) in 2010 and (third term) in 2016.
He has been served as a Union Minister of Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation, Union Minister of Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation with additional charge as Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports with additional charge as Minister of Mines, Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers.
