Subramanian Swamy is an Indian political personality, economist, and statistician. He was born on September 15, 1939 (age 82 years), in Mylapore, Chennai, India. He is a Member of the Rajya Sabha since 2016. He did his study at Harvard University (1965), the University of Delhi, Hindu College, Indian Statistical Institute. His father’s name is Sitaraman Subramanian and his mother’s name is Sitaraman Subramanian.
Swamy was one of the founding members of the Janata Party. He served as the party's president since its inception in 1990 till 2013 when it got merged with the BJP. He was elected to the Lok Sabha five times between 1974 and 1999. Subramanian Swamy started his political career by joining Sarvodaya Movement in the late 1960s. He was elected to Loksabha from the Bombay North East constituency. He defeated Kulkarni Rajaram Alias Raja Gopal of Congress Party in 1977. He was re-elected to Lok Sabha from Mumbai North-East, elected on a Janata Party ticket in 1980. From 1990 -1991 Swamy served as a member of the Planning Commission of India and as a Cabinet Minister of Commerce and Law. In 1990, he became President and Chairman, Central Parliamentary Board, Janata Party. Dr. Swamy served as the Chairman of the Commission on Labour Standards and International Trade between 1994 and 1996. In 1998, he was elected as a member of Lok Sabha from Madurai. He defeated Rambabu. A.G.S. of TMC(M). Also, he became a Member, Committee on Subordinate Legislation Member, Committee on Defence and its Sub-Committee-I Member, Library Committee Member, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
Subramanian Swamy wrote five letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking permission to prosecute then telecom minister A. Raja in regard to the 2G spectrum case in 2008. Supreme Court of India accepted Swamy's petition against the PMP in the 2G case. Raja was arrested by the CBI in the case and got bail on 15 May 2012. Finally, on December 21, 2017, the special CBI Court Judge acquitted the accused including A Raja. After serving as the President of the Janata Party till 2013, he officially joined Bhartiya Janata Party when Rajnath Singh was the party president. Swamy was one of the founding members of the Janata Party and served as its president till 2013. In 2016, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha under Nominated Category.
