Studebaker, now a household name in the field of the historic wagon, carriages, harnesses and automobile manufacturing in America, was originally a wagon producer for farmers, miners and the military. It was founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1868 by the Studebaker brothers: Peter, John Mohler and Clement in South Bend, Indiana, U.S.A. under the name The Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company. In 1902, Studebaker Automobile Company entered the automotive business with an electric car and in 1904, with gasoline vehicles. The company was well- known for producing carriages that won many awards for their unique design and craftsmanship. However, in 1920, it ceased to build wagons and discontinued manufacturing automobiles in 1966. Oldsmobile, Mercury, Studebaker, Hudson and Willys were some of its rivals in that era. Studebaker Automobile Company was the largest vehicle house in the world during that time and offered a wide variety to its customers to choose from Studebaker sulkies, phaetons, broughams, clarences, runabouts, victorias and tandems. They were so popular that the-then President Harrison ordered a full set of Studebaker carriages and harnesses for the White House and Thomas Alva Edison bought the second gasoline vehicle of the company. The company joined hands with two makers of gasoline-powered vehicles, Garford of Elyria, Ohio, and the Everitt-Metzger-Flanders (E-M-F) Company of Detroit and Walkerville, Ontario for body-manufacturing and distribution agreements and began making gasoline-engined cars in partnership with Garford in 1904. Thomas Alva Edison bought the very second gasoline car manufactured by the company. Studebaker established itself as a styling leader it produced vehicles that were stylish, comfortable, affordable and different from others. Some of its iconic cars include Sudebaker Silverlight, Avanti, Flight Hawk, Cruiser, Golden Hawk, Land Cruiser, Speedster and Transtar. The company failed to meet the competitive challenge brought on by Ford and General Motors. A price war started between the companies which included massive discounting and lead to profits for Ford Company. All of the Studebaker's automobiles and trucks were selling poorly by 1963. A Timberline Turquoise Cruiser marks the end of 114 years of Studebaker vehicle production in 1966. The company became dysfunctional in May 1967. During its course, it produced the best luxury vehicles which could be afforded by middle-class people which were not only stylish and reliable but also provided high-speed performance.
