Singer Sonu Nigam has written the following statements in his tweets:
• “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India”
• “And by the way Mohammed did not have electricity when he made Islam.. Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison?”
• “I don’t believe in any temple or gurudwara using electricity To wake up people who don’t follow the religion . Why then..? Honest? True?”

Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, the 4th Caliph of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Djamaat writes in his book “Absolute Justice, Kindness and Kinship, The Three Creative Principles” about “Adhan” in the following words:
There was a time in many Muslim countries when the Fajr Adhan (call for the morning prayer) was not relayed over loudspeakers. The low voice would awaken those who really wanted to hear it and who had every intention of waking up early in the morning. Again, the sound of the Adhans (plural of Adhan) was limited to the neighbourhood surrounding the mosque. Now the situation is completely different. The ego of the clergy is satiated only if his call for prayer is made at the top of his voice and through the most powerful public address systems. If it were only a matter of just one loudspeaker the situation would not have become as intolerable as it has become now. Now the people in the neighbourhood of mosque have to listen to a multitude of Adhans, each starting one after the other, all being recited in different voices at different times and being transmitted loudly, thanks to the highly powerful loudspeakers, from distant parts of the city. Some Maulawis start their Adhan before the break of dawn, others start long after. The result is a cacophony of seemingly never ending Adhans! And that is not all. Some of them sing their Adhans and many just croak. Some Maulawis indulge in practices which were never heard of during the time of the Holy Prophet sa. Many mullahs start to sing Na‘ts and hymns long before the time for morning prayer begins. Then comes the turn of Adhan itself. So from the time of Tahajjud (the pre-dawn prayer) till the first light of day, the citizens including non-Muslims are robbed of their sleep and nerves. Some Maulawis, who think their voices are enchantingly melodious, compliment themselves by believing that the whole town is eagerly awaiting for their chantings to begin. Little do they realise that it is stricken with terror instead. Alas they never cast their eyes over the following verse of the Holy Quran: “…and lower your voice; verily, the most disagreeable of voices is the voice of the donkey”. (Surah Luqman; Ch.31: V.20) It is said that Hafiz Sa‘di Shirazi, a prominent Muslim sufi, once came across a man who was reciting the Holy Quran loudly. Unfortunately he had the most unpleasant voice. Sa‘di suggested to him that he should recite the Quran in a gentler tone and low voice. The man replied, ‘I recite loudly for the sake of Allah, who are you to interfere!’ Sa‘di’s response was, ‘For the sake of Allah, do not recite loudly, or the people will turn against Allah and His Holy Word!’ Islam proclaims to be universal. It follows, therefore, that its mode of worship should evince a universality of its Divine origin. It would have been contrary to the requirement of justice if the new mode of worship imposed on them should have totally rejected their past traditions, so that they could not find any similarity between their customary mode and the one proposed by Islam. The Aazan time, which is around one and half hour before sunrise is actually called “Brahma Muhurath” in Hindu Mythology. I would like to give you the information, which I found in “The Art of Living”, which is as follows:

One should wake up about one and a half hour before the sun rise so that you can synchronize with the rhythm of sun. Ayurveda recommends an auspicious time – Brahma-muhurata which means ‘the time of Brahma…the pure consciousness – for rising up in morning.
About an hour and a half before the sunrise, a great shift in energy fills space. Then, about half an hour before sunrise, a second boom of energy dawns in the atmosphere. Hope, inspiration and peace manifest at this time. This time is considered best for attaining bhram gyan (meditation and self analysis), supreme knowledge and eternal happiness. At this time, the environment is pure and calm and soothing and the mind is fresh after sleep.
Meditation at this time improves mental performance thus helps in increasing satva guna therefore subduing mental irritation or hyperactivity and lethargy which is contributed by rajas and tamas guna.

It is not Azaan that is illegal.But using loudpeakers for Azaan is illegal. See Landmark judgment of the Supreme Court in Cr. appeal 732 of 2000 – Church of God-Full Gospel in India v/s K.K.R. Majestic colony Welfare Association, Chennai and Others decided in August 2000. ” The use of loudspeakers or beating of drums is not part of any religion. Even if there is such a practice, it cannot be allowed to disturb others. Even if ambient noise level is there, no one can contribute to it by use of loudspeakers.”
How true,considering that loudspekaers came into use only about 70 years ago. Religion was there centuries earlier. Besides there is no religious sanction for using loudspeakers and disturbing others. Muslim ultras have been illegally using loudspeakers for Azaan for daily harassment of neighbours and to show their clout. This has to stop. It is good you have spoken against his.
