Sonal Mansingh started her career as an Indian classical dancer in 1962. In 1977, she founded the Centre for Indian Classical Dances (CICD) in New Delhi. In a short time, she became very popular all over the world. She has been awarded many awards like Padma Bhushan (1992), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987, Padma Vibhushan in 2003, and many more. She has been Chairperson of Sangeet Natak Akademi for 2003-05. In 2018, she was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship also known as Akademi Ratna, for her contribution to the field of performing arts. After that, she joined politics as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party and was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the President of India.
