She started her career by singing Maithili folk songs. She received prestigious Padma Bhushan award on the eve of Republic Day 2018 and also won Padma Shri award for her contribution in the music field. During Durga Puja festivities, she is in great demand to perform at various places. During Prime Minister of Mauritius Navin Ramgoolam visit to Bihar, she performed for him also. During Bihar Utsav held in Pragati Maidan in 2010, New Delhi, she was seen performing there. She has been the voice of few Bollywood songs like for movie Maine Pyar Kia (1989) she sang a song named Kahe Toh Se Sajna, for movie Gangs of Wasseypur, part 2 she sang a song named Taar Bijli and for movie Chaarfutiya Chhokare, she sung song named Kaun Si Nagaraia. Sharda, a folk singer synonymous with Chhath, came out with two new songs in 2016 after so many years; her last album was released in 2006. In her song- Supawo Naa Mile Maai and Pahile Pahil Chhathi Maiya- through these songs she urges people to come to Bihar during Chhat Puja. During the Puja, her many popular songs are played like Kelwa Ke Paat Par Ugalan Suraj Mal Jhake Jhake, Jode Jode Supawa, Patna Ke Ghat Par and many more songs, songs are old but people love listening to these songs as they perfectly describe the meaning of Chhath Puja.
