Shanta Chhetri is an Indian politician who is a leader of the All-India Trinamool Congress party. She was born on October 10, 1956 (age 65 years), in Kurseong, India. She is a Member of the Rajya Sabha since 2017. She did her study at the University of North Bengal. Her father’s name is Bir Singh Chhetri and her mother’s name is Shrimati Bishnu Maya Chhetri. She married Deo Chandra Karki.
Shanta Chettri started her political career with the Gorkha National Liberation Front. Also, she was appointed as West Bengal Councillor. She served the post of councilor until 1999. She was a member of various committees like- Committee on Education, Committee on Women and Children, Court of North Bengal University State Legal Services Authority, West Bengal Member, State Labour Welfare Board, West Bengal. She was elected as MLA from the Kurseong constituency. She defeated Tulsi Bhattarai of CPM. She won the election on the GNLF ticket in 1996. She was re-elected as MLA from the same constituency. This time again she defeated Tulsi Bhattarai of CPM. Later she became a Member of the Committee on Health and Family Welfare, West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 2001.
Shanta was again elected to Legislative Assembly from the Kurseong constituency. This time she defeated an independent candidate Buddhiman Rai. During this term, she served as a Member of the Committee on Transport and Committee on Public Works and Public Health Engineering in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 2006. Shanta did not contest Assembly Elections and the party gave the ticket to Pemu Chhetri in 2011. Shanta joined Trinamool Congress. Soon she became working President of All India Trinamool Congress, Darjeeling District (Hills) in 2014. Shanta contested assembly elections from Kurseong seat on AITC ticket bust lost against Rohit Sharma in 2016. She was elected to Rajya Sabha. Then in Sept. 2017, she became a Member of the Committee on Rural Development.
