Shafiqur Rahman Barq started his political career being a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for four terms (1974, 1977, 1985 & 1989). After that in 1990, he was appointed as Cabinet Minister of Govt. of Uttar Pradesh and became General-Secretary of Samajwadi Party, Uttar Pradesh in 1993-194. In 1996, he was first elected to the 11th Lok Sabha and maintained his position for 12th, 14th, 15th, and 17th Lok Sabha. He become a member of the Committee on Human Resource Development in 1996, member of the Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice in 1998, Member of Consultative Committee, Ministry of Commerce in 1998, Member of Committee on Urban and Rural Development and its Sub Committee-I on Urban Affairs and Employment in 1998, Member of Joint Committee on the functioning of Wakf Boards in 1998, Member of Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice in 2004, Member of Committee on Labour in 2009, Member of Consultative Committee, Ministry of Minority Affairs and Corporate Affairs in 2009, Member of Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment in 2019.
He also did some Social and Cultural Activities as well as he established a National Library at Sambhal in Moradabad, he is founder and Life Member of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Post-Graduate College, Sambhal (also Convenor, Urdu Department of the College), Organiser of All India Mushaira in 1957, 1958 and 1959 and president and Jannat Nishan High School, Sambhal. Currently, he is a member of the Committee on Papers Laid on the Table, Member of Standing Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution, and Member of Consultative Committee, Ministry of Minority Affairs.
