Roopa Ganguly was born on 25 November 1966 into a Hindu family in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. By profession, she is an actress, singer and, politician. She attended Beltala Girl’s High School to complete her basic education. Later, she did graduation with a Bachelor of Science from Jogamaya Devi College, Kolkata.
She made her debut in a hit Bengali television series Muktabandha. From which she received a good response from the audience and critics as well. She got major popularity after portraying the role of Draupadi, in B.R. Chopra’s historical T.V. series Mahabharat(1988), which got vast attention. She made her mark with her role in the Vastraharan episode in Mahabharat. After this, she got many Bengali films like Pratik(1988), Tufan(1989), and Agnitrishna(1989). She has also acted in Hindi films like Ek Din Achanak(1989), and Kamla Ki Maut(1989). In 1990, she was seen in Hindi film Bahaar Aane Tak, which was an average on the box office.
In 1991, she appeared in many films like Kovelamudi Bapayya’s, Pyar Ka Devta, Saugandh and also, she has acted in the super hit Kannada film Police Mattu Dada, which was directed by Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay. In the same year, she was seen in the Hindi remake Inspector Dhanush, which was a flop at the box office. In 1993, she appeared in Goutam Ghoshe’s award-winning Bengali film Padma Nadir Majhi. Roopa was appreciated by critics for her role in the movie and received a good response from the audience. In 1995, she was seen in Bengali film Ujan which was directed by Amal Roy Ghatak’s, which won the Best Supporting Actress award for Ujan in 1996. She has appeared in many award-winning films like Bengali film Yugant, Bariwali, Choker Bali, Dekha.
In 2003, she appeared in Bengali film Abar Aranye which was directed by Goutam Ghoshe’s and also, she gave a cameo in Bow Barracks forever(2004) which was directed by Anjan Dutt. In 2005, she was appeared in Antar Mahal, which was directed by Rituparno Ghosh’s and from this, she won many awards for her performance in this film and also, get a good response from critics and audience. In 2005, she appeared in many films like Krantikaal, Nagordola, Ek Mutho Chabi. For Nagordola she was nominated in Anandalok Award nomination in the Best Actress in the Leading Role category in 2006 for her performance in Nagordola film. In 2005, she was in the list of The Telegraph alongside Five Crowning Queens Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Vidya Balan.
In 2007, she was shifted to Mumbai and started working in T.V. serials like Karam Apnaa Apnaa(2007), Love Story(2007), and Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo(2009). In 2011, she received National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her voice in Bengali film Abosheshey(2012). In 2015, she was seen in the Hindi film Babumoshai Bandookbaaz Co-starring with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and was directed by Kushan Nandy. In the same year, she joined Bharatiya Janata Party and in 2016, she was nominated o the Rajya Sabha in the place of Navjot Singh Sidhu. Roopa Ganguly was married to Dhrubo Mukherjee but due to some reasons, they both filed a divorced file and they have one child namely Akash Mukherjee.
