He won his first international medal in 2007. After that, he clinched a bronze medal at the ISSF Santo Domingo World Cup. In 2008, he started hitting record scores, winning his first World Cup at Belgrade, and rapidly rose up the rankings. He came into the limelight when he roped in two silver medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, held in India. In the same year, he was part of the Asian Games, held in China where he won a gold medal or bronze medal and also part of the 2010 ISSF (International Shooting Sports Federation) World Cup which was hosted by Lonato, Italy, he clinched a gold medal with a score of 195 in double trap event. He has been part of the Beijing ISSF World Cup, Maribor ISSF World Cup, and Al Ain ISSF World Cup in the year 2011 and won 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal.
His Beijing victory made him qualify for the men's double trap event at the 2012 London Olympics where he finished 11th with a total of 134. He has been awarded the CNN-IBN Indian of the year in 2011, the "Arjuna Award" and the "Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award" in 2013. World champion shooter Ronjan Sodhi’s name was recommended for the Khel Ratna award in 2013 that sparked controversy with some members of the panel questioning the process of his selection.
