Rita Bahuguna Joshi is an Indian political personality. She was born on 22 Jul 1949 (Age 72) in Allahabad, Indian. Her father’s name is Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna and her mother’s name is Kamala Bahuguna. She married P C Joshi. Rita Bahuguna Joshi is also a renowned writer. She authored two history books before joining the Indian National Congress.
She completed her MA and did her Ph.D. in History. She is also a professor in Medieval and Modern History at the University of Allahabad. She forayed into politics in 1995 by becoming the mayor of Allahabad. She is currently the cabinet minister in the Government of Uttar Pradesh. She was the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee from 2007 to 2012. On 20 October 2016, she joined Bharatiya Janata Party. She was with the Indian National Congress for 24 years before leaving the party. She contested in elections to the Lok Sabha twice but couldn't manage to win both times. In the 2012 state elections, she was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Lucknow Cantonment. She tied the knot with P C Joshi, a mechanical engineer from Patrice Lumumba University. The couple has a son, Mayank Joshi.
Rita Bahuguna Joshi became the Mayor of Allahabad in 1995. Rita Joshi was sent to the Moradabad jail for allegedly making derogatory remarks against then UP Chief Minister Mayawati in 2009. After spending 24 years in Congress, she joined as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2016. Rita Bahuguna was elected to Uttar Pradesh Assembly from Lucknow Cantt seat. She defeated Mulayam Singh Yadav's daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav by the margin of just 33796 votes. Later she was inducted in Yogi Adityanath's cabinet as Women Welfare, Family and Child Welfare minister and Tourism minister in 2017. She will be contesting from Allahabad Lok Sabha's seat in the 2019 elections.
