He won his first assembly election as a JND candidate from the Ballolli constituency by defeating Arakeri Siddharth Sangappa with a 50.26% vote share in 1983. He suffered his first loss in the assembly elections in 1989. He was elected to serve his first term in the Lok Sabha elections from Chikkodi Constituency where he defeated B. Shankarananad of INC with a margin of 131238 votes. He ran with a JDU ticket in 1998.
