He was born on 24 Jan 1955 (age 66 years according to 2021) in Patna, Bihar, India. His father’s name is Late Jwala Prasad Singh and his mother’s name is Smt. Kaushalya Devi. His educational qualification is B.A. (Hons.), History from T.N.B. College, Bhagalpur University, Bihar. His religion belongs to Hinduism and Nationality, India. He married Smt. Renu Devi on 14 Jun 1977 and has one daughter.
Rajiv Ranjan Alias Lalan Singh started his political career in his college life as he was a General Secretary of the College Students Union and participated in the student movement of 1974 led by Loknayak Jay Prakash Narayan. In 2000, he was first elected to the Rajya Sabha and elected to the 14th Lok Sabha representing the Begusarai constituency. He was re-elected to the 15th Lok Sabha (2nd term) from the same constituency and re-elected to the 17th Lok Sabha (3rd term) from Munger (Bihar) Constituency. He has been a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and Minister for Water Resources and Planning & Development Bihar Government for 2014-19. Currently, he is serving as a Leader of Janata Dal (United) in Lok Sabha since 2019, National President JD(U) Janata Dal (United) since 2021.
