He was a Cabinet Minister, Narmada, Irrigation and Water Supply, Government of Gujarat in 1995. He contested and won the Amreli assembly seat and defeated Jivrajbhai Vagadia of INC by a margin of 4771 votes in 1995. He retained the Amreli assembly seat for a second term and defeated Bhuva Harjibhai by a margin of 8081 votes in 1998. He was a Cabinet Minister, Agriculture, Government of Gujarat in 2001. He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 2008. He was a Member of, Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice in 2009. He was a Member of, Committee on Chemicals and Fertilizers in 2010. He was inducted into Modi's cabinet as MoS Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in 2019. Purshottam Rupala was promoted to the cabinet rank as Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying in 2021.
