Neil Nitin Mukesh Chand Mathur was born on 15 January 1982 at Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. His father was a Bollywood playback singer, Nitin Mukesh. He was educated from Brown Lawns H Kindergarten and HR college in the UK, from where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in commerce at his father’s insistence. Then, he decided to pursue in acting, despite being born into a family of singers. He trained at a four-month workshop at the Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting Institute and received training from actor Anupam Kher.

He made his first acting debut in Sriram Raghavan’s in 2007 thriller Jhonny Gaddaar. His portrayal of a crook received many positive reviews from critics and through which he earned a Best Male Debut nomination at 53^rd Filmfare awards. In 2009, his film “Aa Dekhen Zara” was the science-fiction thriller, co-starring with Bipasha Basu. Niel played a struggling photographer who inherits a camera from his scientist grandfather. The film was a critical and commercial failure. After that, he appeared in Kabir Khan’s action drama “New York” with John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Irrfan Khan, the film was a critical and commercial success, earning over Rs. 610 million worldwide. Neil performance was praised by critics, earning him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at 55^th Filmfare awards. In 2010, he appeared with actress Deepika Padukone in Pradeep Sarkar’s romantic drama “Lafangey Parindey”, while film received mixed reviews, which was appreciated by critics. The film was a moderate commercial success, with worldwide revenue of Rs. 310 million. Then, he starred n Sudhir Mishra’s dramatic thriller “Tera Kya Hoga Johhny”. The following year he starred in Vishal Bhardwaj’s “7 Khoon Maaf” with Priyanka Chopra, a black comedy in which Priyanka was a woman who murders her seven husbands in an unending quest for love in which, Neil cast as Priyanka’s first husband. In 2013, he starred in three films, though all were commercially unsuccessful. He completed his work on two films-Prerna Wadhwan’s romantic drama Ishqeria, which will see him star opposite Richa Chadda and Manish Vatsalya’ Dussehra, where he will feature as an encounter specialist with Tena Desae. Niel also acted in Sooraj R. Barjatyas family drama Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in 2015 with Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor. In 2017, he married with Rukmini Sahay in a traditional Hindu wedding arranged by the familial elders. In 2018, he had announced through Instagram that they are currently expecting their first child due later on in the year. He was then blessed with a baby girl Nurvi Neil Mukesh on 20 September 2018. He also started an NGO to support and help needy women by providing them with food, shelter and vocational training to support themselves which was founded by him in 2009.
