He was born on 7 December 1966 (age 54 years according to 2021) in Mangalore, Dakshina Kannada (Karnataka), India. His father’s name is Late Shri Niranjan Shetty and his mother’s name is Smt. Sushila N Shetty. His educational qualification is Matriculate from St. Philomena High School, Puttur, Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka. His religion belongs to Hinduism and Nationality, Indian. He married Sridevi N Shetty on 02 May 2001 and has two daughters.
Nalin Kumar Kateel started his political career as a Prachark of Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS). After that, he joined Bharatiya Janta Party and has been District general secretary of the party in the year 2004. He was elected to 15th Lok Sabha from Dakshina Kannada (Karnataka) Constituency in 2009 and maintained his position in parliament for 16th Lok Sabha (2nd term) in 2014 and 17th Lok Sabha (3rd term) in 2019 from the same Constituency. In 17th Lok sabha, he was made a member of the Standing Committee on Rural Development, a member of the Committee on Government Assurances, and a member of the Consultative Committee, the Ministry of Shipping. Currently, he is appointed as the 9th State President of Bharatiya Janata Party of Karnataka.
